British Steels Llanwern works

British Steels Llanwern works have a large compressed air system on the Steel Plant comprising;
  • 3 x Atlas Copco ZR6 (two A’s and one M)
  • 1 x Atlas Copco ZR5/53
  • 4 x Refrigerant dryers (with post filters)

Our initial AirAudit identified several areas for improvement. These included the poor dew point inappropriate loading control high unload running hours of a large machine and significant pressure fluctuations across the network.

There were also concerns that the area was unmanned and any problems would not be seen before they became critical. This resulted in BSSP spending $237 523 per year on electricity to run their compresors.

Following modifications to the systems according to our recommendations we installed an Management System. The improvement in network pressure can be seen below:

This area of pressure change shows how the pressure responded during the cooling water failure. This programme of improvements has reduced BSSP’s electricity costs by $69,000 per annum. It also prevented a plant shut by detecting a cooling water failure and alerting the engineers to the fault.

During this failure the network pressure was still maintained with a 6 psi, a similar failure just prior to the modifications resulted in a fire and a large repair bill.
